AUDI AND THEIR “PREMIUM” Q7 MODEL SINCE 2006 UNTIL NOW: “VORSPRUNG DURCH TECHNIK”? (Audi’s slogan is indeed “Advance through technology”)

Sorry for the delay of this new article, I’ve been traveling abroad for some days and had no time to write it. Please keep some patience, still a couple of days to wait before reading all details about the new Q7 accident of this 2008 spring. In between, some words about the evolution of Audi and of its Q7 model since 2006 until now.  Some testimonials about certain Q7’s:

-          Johan P (Belgium – E-mail testimonial): in November 2006, he had his Q7 since April 2006 and had already got the following problems: car delivered with defect lights at the rear en some other electronic problems. Johan brings the car back to the C. garage in Leuven (Belgium), where the car is being given back to him, without those problems but with the following explanation “we found nothing, everything was all right”. A lot of strange noises when he drove the car and when driving above a slow ramp. No electricity anymore on the battery when not driving the car for 7 days. Problems with the pneumatic suspension and the rear drive camera that do not work always.

 -          France (web testimonial of 2 July 2007): got his Q7 on 12 December 2006, after 15 days gets back to the dealer that sold the vehicle to him, complaining that the car was strangely deviating   to the right, the dealer said “don’t worry; we’ll see this at the first technical inspection”. He kept on driving for another two months, after that he observed an abnormal abrasion of the right front tire, the dealer cannot solve the problem, suggests him to drive another 1500 km; he refuses and asks the dealer to replace the tires under warranty. Telephone disputes over 15 days, he finally gets the acceptation of the dealer to replace under warranty the tires of his 70.000 EUR vehicle that had driven only 10.000km.  Recuperate his car, but once again, nothing goes right, despite 5 times at the service and 3 controls and adjustments of the wheel geometry, the car still deviates at the right and strange vibrations occur at the driving wheel…

 -          France (web testimonial of 28 October 2007): Q7 owner since December 2006, has not driven off-road nor hit any obstacles (!). First he had some water from the washer fluid flowing into the car and destroying the carpet. After 15000 km, no battery any more. Electrical problems with the radio, DVD and the lights of the dash board. The car deviates to the right. Right front tire suffers abnormal wear and tear by 19000km. Thinks the car is very comfortable but much less reliable, hopes Audi shall handle this problem seriously, as his opinion was that he thought Audi to be a responsible brand. -          Italy/December 2007-April 2008 (E-mail testimonial): Tom M. orders his new Q7 directly in Germany as he had heard that some cars delivered outside Germany had problems. Tom begins to drive it in December 2006. After 2000 km, he feels uncomfortable vibrations when using the brakes. Audi replaced the discs in warranty. Yet, after another 2000km, the same happens again. Audi refuses to replace the discs again, arguing that it happened “because of the driver’s style”. Tom writes a letter to Audi in Ingolstadt and tells them that he’ll ask for a survey by SGS and TUV and that he plans to launch a legal case in Germany. The manufacturer accepts to replace the discs again. Tom is still arguing with them today, the Italian dealer where he brought the car does his best to try to solve the problem, at the last meeting they had with an Audi inspector, this one told them that this is due to the so called shimmy effect (shimmy = shaking or vibrations of a vehicle's front wheels from side to side due to problems with tire alignment or suspension). Tom is currently waiting for the dealer to buy a machine that allows solving the problem. To be continued.

Link to this web article (in Romanian): http://www.piticstyle.ro/2008/01/06/zapada-multa-zapada/  -          Netherlands (web testimony on 7 January 2008): when bringing his car to the dealer for a control, a Q7 owner gets informed that an abnormal clearance was found at the right front wheel. It has been found at the articulation between the handle bar and the wheelhouse. The car had not driven a lot and the driver has driven it softly. It was too early to have this kind of problems, this incident raises questions. The defect part was going to be replaced in warranty. Imagine what could have happened if the handlebar got loss from the wheel house. It should not left much together from the front wheel and the whole suspension.Link to this comment on the Dutch blog www.autoblog.nl (see down on that page, the comment of 7 January 2008): http://www.autoblog.nl/archive/2006/08/30/een-ontevreden-ex-q7-rijder#comment-1246422 -          A guy I work with  who got possession of his Q7 almost in the same time as me also informed me that his Audi Q7 already had two recalls at the dealer, out of the normal periodical technical inspections. I do not know if this has been the case for more cars delivered in the beginning of the delivery period of the Q7 model (March – July 2006). Maybe some of you can confirm this (please leave your comments by pushing on button “Reacties” here under). And some words about the company itself and its “premium” Q7 model: -          number of produced Audi Q7’s during the first 2 years: 72 169 units in 2006 and 77 395 units in 2007-          the Q7 model represents some 7,8% of the total number of the yearly production of Audi-          my statistics about similar accidents to ours, occurred during the first 2 years existence of this model: 0,13%-0,14% (related to the 2006 – 2007 production)-          after 5 financial successful years as CEO of Audi, “prof MW” (CEO of Audi during the dispute about our accident of 2006) got promoted as CEO of VW (by the end of 2006)-          one of the first things “prof MW” did as a CEO of VW was closing a big part of the VW factory in Brussels where more than 50% of the personnel lost their jobs (begin 2007)-          at the head of Audi, new CEO “RS” runs the business since begin 2007; does he have a new attitude towards similar accidents as ours? Read this in the next article on this blog. The next article will give you the details about the new accident of an Audi Q7. Until then, I can disclose another photo of the 2008 accident, near one of the similar 2006 accident:  2008                                                                                                2006

BUT FIRST AN INTERMEZZO WITH SOME GENERAL NEWS…

Before getting in detail with the new Audi Q7 « event » of 2008, let’s see what happened since begin November 2006, when we stopped updating this blog. Let’s begin with other manufacturers, as I always said that Audi is not the only manufacturer having this kind of problems or behavior. - In 2007, a Chinese driver had an accident with his S350 Mercedes, the airbags didn’t work. Read this story via this link: http://news.windingroad.com/countriesmarkets/china/chinese-man-vows-to-only-drive-cars-built-in-china-after-crashing-mercedes-s350/ - After a horrible accident of June 1999, where two kids of 9 and 10 years were killed, Volvo was condemned in January 2008 to pay a fine of 200 kEUR (accident due to brake problems);see French written article via this linkhttp://news.caradisiac.com/Volvo-condamne-a-200-000-EUR-844  - new incidents and accidents with several Lamborghini Murcielago’s (Lamborhini being 100% owned by Audi): see Martin’s blog http://www.lambounfall.de/lamborghini_murcielago_crash.html  - I bought myself by the end of 2006, after our Audi Q7 accident, a BMW 5 Touring (break) that had rain water coming inside because of a factory error when mounting the drains of the sunroof (BMW recognized their fault and repaired it) and a Mercedes R class that was only delivered after almost 5 months delay while ordered as a car in stock (human error of the commercial guy – Mercedes put replacement car at our disposal, for free, over the whole waiting period). The article of tomorrow will handle more specific news about Audi and about its Q7 since November 2006. Until then, some additional photo’s to compare 2008 to 2006 cases:           2008                                                                  2006

No news, new photos

As we all have to wait for the result of the analysis of the University of Ghent, I posted some additional photos taken during the technical inspection (see photos in the right column). You'll understand what it really means when Euro NCAP crash test says there is (used to be ?) a problem on the Audi Q7 because it had a rupture that occurred during the test in the driver's footwell in a frontal test (my daughter knows the result of this).

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/News/articleId=11705...

Take also a look at the last photo and see the difference in colour between the two broken surfaces, meaning that there was a problem on the darker side (see detail in photo above in the same right column), while no existing problem seems to have existed on the other rupture surface.

As I do not want to be always negative, here are two photos of my ex-Audi Q7 when it was still alive (no it's "still life"). Yes, it existed indeed and it was a nice car:

Hope to get the results of the technical analysis within 2 weeks

It normally takes approximately two weeks to get an answer on such a technical request as the one addressed by the technical experts to the University of Ghent (about the broken casting parts). I hope that Audi will also inspect the electronic box of the car after this, to see if the collision level was sufficient to trigger the airbags.

I do not want to discuss here the last recalls of Audi about the Audi A8's (October-November 2005 and August-September 2006) with regard to airbag problems, I'm not sure if they're related to the airbags problem in my Audi Q7, yet if someone knows more about this, please post a comment.

Still no other news available about our accident

As no news are available about our case (the concerned broken casting parts were sent last Friday or will be sent today to the University of Ghent), I post two new topics I discovered on the Internet:

- first being an accident occured two years ago with a Lamborghini Murcielago (Lamborghini being 100% Audi owned), where the attitude of the manufacturer seems quite similar to our case (Martin, the victim, after being heard several times in court, finally sent a letter to Audi last Monday, let's see if he'll have any reaction on this). Read his story on his site : http://www.lambounfall.de

- second being the fact that an Audi Q7 burned in Croatia, by the end of August 2006, while simply parked. I only have a link to a Croatian newspaper (sorry, but I'm not capable to translate the text, if one of you can do it, please send the translation to me at aga@robelco.be): http://www.jutarnji.hr/dogadjaji_dana/clanak/art-2006,8,22,samozapaljenje_terenca,39862.jl

P.S. About the other accident for which I posted the links to the photos in my previous thread, I know now where it happened and try to get in touch with the owner. I'll also post on this blog more photos of my Audi Q7, photos I took during the tehnical inspection of last week. I remember you that all photo's are available by request (send me an E-mail to the E-mail address mentioned here above).

Expertise only next week on Tuesday August 29th

You will not believe it, but the expertise has been delayed. All the concerned parties were there last Wednesday (Audi Belgium, the insurance company, myself), but they didn't think about the fact that the auto had to be transported from outside to the inside of the garage (it has no wheels in front, you remember)... Yeah, we're not in the USA or in the UK, we're in Belgium. They expected maybe that I would carry the 2.5 ton vehicle myself. So, a little more patience until next week !

I can hardly imagine sometimes that I am (or maybe used to be) an Audi client. How can I still believe in Audi's skills and brand when I see the way they handle this: no contact until now from any customer relationships manager, only their technical experts (they maybe be nice, but it's not their business to take care of their clients). Or maybe is it so different here in Belgium? Yet the AUDI dealer here is a listed company. Where are their values? I can hardly imagine the USA guys or the UK guys acting like this towards their clients (Adrian had a reaction from a PR AUDI guy in the UK within 24 hours and here in Belgium they didn't call me at all until now, almost two months after the accident).

Maybe they do not care about this. Yet, when I recall what happened with the A-klasse from Mercedes some years ago...  This brand new Audi Q7 lost its wheel on the highway without any external reason. Do all Q7's risk to have such an incident?

Will I ever dare driving an Audi again? Or a Q7 (I really found it a very nice car, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it). Currently I'm afraid every time I see one in the street and I try to keep a certain distance, because I continuously think about what happened to us and see again in my mind the car flying away of the highway... I'm currently loosing all confidence in Audi. Will they be able to explain everything and convince me to ever drive a Q7 again? I don't know... They do not give me the impression that they really bother...

High definition photos of the car available

If you want to receive (one or more of) these photos, send me en E-mail to aga@robelco.be and give me your E-mail adress. You'll receive them if you wish. I still have to get the photo of the right wheel, so that you can also see what happened to it.
